Where Travelers roadside coverage shines is its Premier upgrade. By paying about $20 per vehicle per year, policyholders enjoy trip interruption and personal property coverage, which will reimburse you for certain expenses if your road trip is cut short or if personal belongings inside your car are lost in an accident covered by your collision or comprehensive insurance.

How Does Travelers Roadside Assistance Work?

After adding roadside assistance to your Travelers auto policy, you can arrange for emergency roadside services at any hour of the day.^[3] When you experience a mechanical breakdown, you should be able to request support via phone, mobile app or online portal.

Keep in mind that a prerequisite for upgrading your Travelers roadside plan to Premier is having comprehensive and collision insurance. If you’re still paying off your car loan or leasingyour car, then it is likely that you have these coverages already.

How Often Can I Use Travelers Roadside Assistance?

According to a Travelers agent based in Texas, Travelers roadside coverage includes four service calls for six-month policies or eight for 12-month policies. This can vary by location.

Can I Use My Travelers Roadside Assistance for Someone Else?

Travelers roadside assistance plans follow the vehicle, not the person. That means if you’re in a friend’s car as the driver or passenger, you cannot use the roadside coverage from your own policy if that car breaks down and needs a tow.^[4]

That said, your personal auto policy will generally insure you while driving a rental car so it is possible that you can arrange for roadside emergency services if you rent a car for the weekend.^[4]

How Long Does Travelers Roadside Assistance Take?

There is no average wait time for roadside services to arrive posted on the Travelers website. In general, drivers can wait up to one hour on average for a tow truck to arrive, although this can vary on multiple factors such as what type of service you need, how far away you are and the type of vehicle you drive.^[5]

What Does Travelers Roadside Assistance Include?

Policyholders will gain access to a suite of roadside assistance services through Travelers:^[3]

If you upgrade to the Premier plan, you’ll also gain a trip interruption benefit and personal property coverage. If you’re on a road trip and your vehicle breaks down more than 100 miles from home, trip interruption will pay $200 each day for lodging, meals and other expenses up to the maximum limit of $600. Meanwhile, personal property coverage will provide $500 of coverage for damaged or stolen personal property as part of a comprehensive, collision or glass claim.^[3]

What Isn’t Included With Travelers Roadside Assistance

If you’re requested for fuel delivery because your car ran out of fuel, Travelers will cover the cost of delivery but not the price of the fuel itself. This will be paid out of pocket. Similarly, Travelers will pay toward the labor costs of replacing a flat tire but you must supply the spare tire yourself.

How Much Does Travelers Roadside Assistance Cost?

The cheapest roadside plan (Basic) will only cost $10 per vehicle per year, which is less than $1 per month for a single-vehicle policy. Upgrading to Premier will double the cost to $20 per vehicle per year, or less than $2 per month. How Do I Request Travelers Roadside Assistance?

Emergency roadside services through Travelers are available 24/7 to Basic or Premier roadside assistance plan customers. Call the Travelers roadside assistance phone number at 1-800-252-4633 for immediate assistance if you have a mechanical breakdown and Travelers will send a technician to provide your requested service.^[3] You can also submit a request for roadside assistance online or through the Travelers mobile app.

How Do I Add Travelers Roadside Assistance to My Existing Policy?

You can easily add roadside assistance to your Travelers car insurance plan by signing in to your account using Travelers’ online portal or mobile app. Additionally, you can speak with your local Travelers insurance agent or the customer service department at 1-800-842-5075 to add this coverage.^[6]

Pros & Cons of Travelers Roadside Assistance

Pros

• Affordable: Travelers' roadside assistance plans are affordable, especially when considering the average cost of a tow is $109 according to J.D. Power.^[7] To compare, a Travelers Basic plan is only $10 per vehicle per year and includes flat tire changes, winching, and fuel delivery on top of towing services.
• Good towing radius: Travelers roadside assistance towing will pay toward the first 15 miles of a tow under the basic plan or a 100-mile radius for the Premier roadside assistance package.^[3]
• Trip interruption coverage: Upgrading to Premier unlocks trip interruption reimbursement, which can cover meal, hotel and other expenses if your trip experiences a covered setback.
• Personal property coverage: Certain personal belongings inside your car are covered if they’re damaged or stolen if part of a covered comprehensive, collision or glass claim.
• More service calls than others: A Travelers agent specified that you receive four service calls for a six-month policy (eight calls for a 12-month policy). Other providers may limit the number of services to only three to four per year.

• Must purchase comprehensive or collision coverage to upgrade to Premier: Travelers Insurance only allows customers with comprehensive and collision insurance to upgrade to the Premier roadside assistance plan.^[3]
• Limited availability: Travelers does not have dedicated auto insurance pages for Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming, Alaska. As a result, you may not be able to get auto insurance or roadside assistance in the states, although the Travelers website still recommends that you talk to your local agent if you live in this state.^[2]
