Country vs. Electric: What You Need to Know

Country Financial is a group of US insurance and financial services companies available in 19 states in the U.S. Their history began in 1925, when a group of Agricultural Association members from Illinois formed a company, Country Mutual Insurance, selling fire and lightning insurance. In the following four years, new products were included in their portfolios, such as crop hail and farm insurance, auto, and life insurance. By 1953, Country Preferred Insurance Company was incorporated and in 1965 another company, Country Capital Management, was formed as a registered broker-dealer, allowing them to offer securities products, mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, and 529 College Savings Plans. In 1997, based on their principle of putting people first, the client service center became available 24 hours a day. The company adopted the name Country Financial in 2008, to better describe their vision of being “The Best Provider of Financial Security in America.” Country Life Insurance Company®, Country Mutual Insurance Company®, and its respective subsidiaries are located in Bloomington, IL. Today, Country Financial serves about one million households and businesses throughout the United States and offers a range of insurance and financial products, including auto, home, life, health, commercial, farm & ranch, and crop insurance, and retirement planning, education funding, annuities, and planning services.

The history of Electric Insurance Company began in 1927, when EMLICO, its former company was established to provide GE (General Electric Company) with Workers’ Compensation insurance in Massachusetts. The company was doing so well that it started providing coverage nationally for GE and also included general liability and commercial auto in its product portfolio. By 1966, Electric Insurance Company was formed to ensure GE employees, but after a while, it expanded its business to all consumers. During the 1990s the company becomes one of the first P&C carriers to offer consumers web-based insurance quotes. Today, Electric Insurance manages approximately $160 million in personal lines premiums for nearly 135,000 policyholders and has about $450 million in total written premium. Its services are offered in all 50 states directly via mobile applications and the web and through independent agencies. Its consumer base is 60% of GE employees and 40% general customers.
