Donegal Mutual vs. American National: What You Need to Know

Donegal Insurance Group has had a long story that began in Marietta, Pennsylvania, where some farmers banded together to provide mutual protection for their property and farms. In 1889, Donegal and Conoy Mutual Fire Insurance Company issued their first insurance policy to a local farmer for dwelling coverage. The company offered very few insurance products and serviced a small area. In 2017, the company merged with the Mountain States Mutual Casualty Company to market commercial products as the Mountain States Insurance Group in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah.

American National Insurance Company (ANICO) was founded in 1905 by William Lewis Moody Jr. and headquartered in Gavelston, Texas. During the decades of the 1920s, the company’s assets increased more than 400 percent, compared with the national average for insurance companies at that time. The company continued to grow rapidly, even during the Depression and avoided laying off employees or suffering annual losses.

Although the majority of the stock continues to be controlled by the Moody family through the Moody Foundation and Libby Shearn Moody Trust, the American National Family of Companies is a publicly-traded company under the NASDAQ symbol ANAT. Today, the company provides service for more than 5 million policyholders and it’s an S&P 500 company ranking the top 5% nationwide.
