Alfa vs. Pekin: What You Need to Know

In 1946 John Tucker Harris, President of the Lee County Farm Association and respected farmer in Alabama, founded Alfa as the product of the Alabama Farmers Federation. He wanted to offer superior fire insurance to federation members, who were mainly farmers. Today, Alfa is a much larger enterprise and offers more than just fire insurance. They offer coverages to over 1 million customers in 11 states: Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida, and North Carolina. It is still affiliated with Alabama Farmers. Alfa’s vision for the future is to focus on technology to enhance productivity and better serve customers. The company also plans to invest heavily in product and geographic expansion.

In 1921, a group of farmers, all members of the Tazewell County Farm Bureau, formed an organization to make automobile insurance more affordable. The organization was called The Farmers Automobile Insurance Association. The first Pekin Insurance office was located in the Tazewell County Courthouse, a space donated by the County Board Supervisors. With 187 policies, the six-month premium was $5 for glass, fire, lightning, windstorm, full-coverage collision, property damage and bodily injury. All cars were charged the same premium. In 1932, they added 24-hour claim service. They adopted the telephone number #1334 for claims service. By 1939, Pekin had 20,000 policies and by 1945, 30,000. In 1952, they added fire insurance and in 1960, Inland Marine coverage. In 1966, the company moved into its new and current home office on Court Street and they now have 8 service offices in six states: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Pekin Life Insurance Company, which was established in 1969, also offers products in Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Virginia. They began selling group health insurance in 1970 and pre-need insurance in 1993. In 2010, they adopted a new slogan, Beyond the expected®. In 2011, they created a unit called Group Plan Solutions for businesses. Today Pekin Insurance has over 900,000 policyholders and more than 8,500 independent agents.
