Allied Mutual Automobile Association was formed by Harold Evans in 1929. After years of operating as a standalone brand, Allied Insurance became Nationwide in 1998. Policies, documents, bills and account statements for Allied customers now feature the Nationwide name and logo.

Vern V. Moulton and four of his associates founded Auto-Owners Insurance Company in a single room in the Commercial Block Building in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The company moved to Lansing, Michigan where it still is today. In its first year, Auto-Owners Insurance had only one book of policyholders and $174.25 in total assets. In 1935, Auto-Owners extended beyond Michigan and began writing policies in Indiana. In 1951, the company opened the doors to its new four-story home in downtown Lansing and 400 associates moved in. In 1966 the company established Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company. In 1976, the company moved into its current home in Lansing. Auto-Owners Insurance celebrated its 100th anniversary. In 2017, Auto-Owners began its affiliation with Concord General Mutual Insurance group. Today, Auto-Owners Insurance writes policies in 26 states and has more than 4,700 employees. The company has been a member of the Fortune 500 since 2002. In 2018, Auto-Owners Insurance was listed at number 375.
