The company entered the Fortune 500 at 297. In 2008, Ameriprise Financial acquired J.&W. Seligman and H&R Block Financial Advisors. During the financial crisis, Ameriprise Financial advanced $700 million to help clients with cash needs. In 2010, Ameriprise Financial became the eighth-largest manager of long-term U.S. mutual fund assets, largely due to the acquisition of Columbia Management. In 2014, it launched the Confident Retirement® approach. The new Columbia Threadneedle Investments brand was launched in 2015. In 2017, Columbia Threadneedle Investments acquired Lionstone Investments, a real estate investment firm and Investment Professionals, Inc, a new advisor channel to serve clients of financial institutions. In 2019, the National trust bank converted to Ameriprise Bank, FSB.

In 1869, MetLife began offering financial protection to working-class Americans, mostly Civil War sailors and soldiers. It was then called the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and soon shifted its focus on life insurance. By 1909, MetLife was the nation’s largest life insurer. From 1907 to 2005, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower was the company’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan. It was the world’s tallest building until 1913. This famous building emanated light for years with the slogan, “The light that never fails,” and it was often featured in MetLife advertisements.
