Liberty Mutual Group is a global insurer and the fourth largest propertyand casualty insurer in the U.S, ranking 68th on Fortune 100 list of thelargest corporations in the U.S. The company has assets of more than $100billion. Today the group employs over 50,000 people in over 900 locationsaround the globe, including 45 U.S. states. Liberty Mutual formed on July1, 1912, as Massachusetts Employees Insurance Association (MEIA) andemerged after state law began to require that employers carry protectionfor their employees. MEIA provided workers’ compensation insurance tocompanies, and the first auto policy was sold in 1918. In 1920, the companyused a then-new medium of film to teach people about workplace safety. Thefirst Liberty Mutual home office opened its doors in Boston in 1937. In1946, they created an emergency stop switch for escalators. In 1957 LibertyMutual and Cornell University partnered to create a “safety car” by crashtesting with dummies, something that had never been done before. In 1964,Liberty Mutual began selling life insurance though the Liberty LifeAssurance Branch. The first battery-powered prosthetic elbow was created bythe company in 1967. As Liberty Mutual grew, it expanded beyond NorthAmerica by opening its first operation in the UK. In the 1990s, theycontinued to grow through the acquisition of large commercial and riskcarriers. In 2008, Safeco became a part of Liberty Mutual. In 2016reaffirmed its commitment to innovation by creating Solar Labs.

Erie Insurance Exchange was founded in 1925 by H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford,in the city of Erie, Pennsylvania. H.O. Hirt hoped to create a companybased on superior service using the mantra, “The ERIE is Above all insERvIcE,” with the letters "E-R-I-E" raised in capitals out of the word“service.” It still remains the company tagline today. Three years afterbeing established, the company was doing so well that it expanded itsbusiness by opening its first office outside Erie, in Pittsburgh. By 1934,the company created the “Super Standard Auto Policy,” which was used as amodel for other insurance companies across the country. The company laterexpanded its product portfolio into a home, business and in the year 1967,Erie Family Life Insurance Company was formed, offering life insurance toconsumers. Erie Indemnity Company was registered with the Securities andExchange Commission in 1994 and in the following year it was listed onNASDAQ. Today, Erie Insurance Company ranks number 381 on the 2019 FORTUNE500® list and has over 5,000 employees and 12,000 independent agents. Also,the company ranks highest among auto insurers in providing a satisfyingpurchase experience, with a score of 917 (on a 1,000-point scale).
