National General Insurance, formerly GMAC Insurance Group, is the only onein the United States to be founded within the automotive industry. Thecompany’s history began in 1920, in North Carolina, when Integon, a lifeinsurance company, was founded: One part of the company became NationalGeneral Insurance and the second was Motor Insurance Company, founded in1925, by General Motors. In the year 1969, Integon started a holdingcompany and began insuring high-risk drivers and by 1997, the company wasacquired by GMAC. By 2013, GMAC changed its name to National GeneralInsurance. Today, the National General Insurance Group is one of thelargest automobile insurers in the United States, offering a variety ofproperty and casualty products. The company operates and sells itsinsurance products through over 10,000 independent agents and brokersacross the US.

After the state of Illinois passed laws regarding workers’ compensation in1912, James S. Kemper founded the Mutual Casualty Co to sell accidentinsurance. Soon after, the company began selling auto insurance. Only sevenyears later, Kemper had offices all over the country and eventually changedits name to James S. Kemper & Co. By late 1960, annual revenues approached$150 million. They also moved offices from Chicago to Long Grove and becamea part of a holding company called Kemperco Inc. By the 1970s, the companychanged its name to Kemper Corp and revenue reached nearly $1 billion. Bythe 1980s, Kemper began offering financial services until 1995, when Kemperwas acquired by Zurich Insurance of Switzerland, who then sold off thesecurities division to Kemper employees as a separate company called EverenSecurities Inc. In the 1990s the company acquired Unitrin Insurance andfounded Kemper Corporation. In the early 2000s, Kemper Insurance Companieslaid off thousands of employees in Chicago and across the country. In 2003,they sold off their service organization. In 2015 Kemper acquired AllianceUnited Insurance Company and in 2018 the company acquired InfinityInsurance Company. Kemper boasts $11 billion in assets, servicingapproximately seven million policies, employing more than 30,000 agents andbrokers as well as 7,800 associates. Kemper is licensed to sell insurancein 50 states and the District of Columbia.
