PURE insurance focuses on high net-worth individuals to create specialized insurance solutions. Policies are broad and flexible and tailored to individual needs. CEO Ross Buchmueller has a career that spans more than 30 years of focus on specialized property and casualty needs of high net-worth individuals and families. He was at Chubb Group for more than a decade and founded AIG’s Private Client Group, serving as its president for more than six years. In 2006, he and colleagues Martin Hartley and Jeffrey Paraschac set out to create an insurance company with a reduced conflict between shareholders and policyholders while providing exceptional coverage, service, and savings. Pure insurance recapitalized equity investments from funds managed by Stone Point Capital, KKR and the management team in 2015. Tokio Marine Holdings Inc. bought Privilege Underwriters Inc and PURE Group for $3.1 billion in October 2019. The acquisition closed the first quarter of 2020. The company is expended to expand and diversify its international business. PURE has a 96% member retention rate and an industry-leading Net Promoter Score. The company has been growing rapidly and has a premium volume in excess of $400 million.
Pemco was founded in 1949 by Robert J. Handy, a Seattle journalism and math teacher. He had at first envisioned insuring teachers, who were members of the Seattle Teachers Credit Union which he founded in 1939 (it later became the School Employees Credit Union of Washington). He wanted to “create a financial institution with a heart.” Handy was also working for an insurance agency, which enabled him to sell auto insurance to educators who came to the credit union to secure car loans.
