About Anthem

In 2004, WellPoint Health Networks Inc and Anthem, Inc. merged and became the nation’s leading health benefits company. In December 2014 WellPoint Inc. changed its corporate name to Anthem, Inc. The Anthem companies offer health care plans and related services like dental, vision, behavioral health, life insurance and disability insurance benefits as well as long-term care insurance and flexible spending accounts. Anthem has about 40 million members and is ranked 33rd on the Fortune 500.

The Anthem Inc. headquarters are located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is an independent licensee of Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, serving California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin and specialty plan members in other states.

Anthem existed prior to the merger with WellPoint. In 1993, it merged with Blue Cross and Blue Shield. In 1995, Anthem merged with Community Mutual, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan in Ohio. In 1996, WellPoint Health Networks and Blue Cross of California merged and then acquired the Group Life and Health Subsidiary of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1997, Anthem merged with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut. In 1997, Anthem acquired Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Hampshire and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado and Nevada. In 2000, Anthem acquired Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine. That same year, WellPoint acquired Rush Prudential Health Plans of Illinois and the mail-service pharmacy fulfillment center of RxAmerica.

In 2001 WellPoint acquired Cerulean Companies Inc., the parent company of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia. In 20 Anthem acquired Trigon Healthcare of Virginia, a Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan. That same year WellPoint Health Networks acquired RightCHOICE, the parent company of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri and HealthLink, and MethodistCare, an HMO in Texas.

In 2003, WellPoint Health Networks acquired Golden West Dental and Vision in California. It also acquired Cobalt Corp. and its family of companies, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield United of Wisconsin. In 2004, Anthem and WellPoint Health Networks merged to become WellPoint, Inc. In 2005, they acquired Lumenos, the market leader in consumer-driven health plans. WellPoint Inc. then merged with WellChoice. In 2007, WellPoint Inc. acquired imaging Management Holdings, LLC, whose sole business is the holding company parent of American Imaging Management, In (AIM). AIM is a radiology benefit management and technology company.

In 2008 WellPoint acquired Resolution Health, Inc, a personal health care guidance company. In 2009, WellPoint acquired DeCare Dental, one of the largest administrators of dental plans. WellPoint then sold NextRX subsidiaries to Express Scripts. It also sold its commercial UniCare membership in Illinois and Texas to Health Care Service Corporation.

In 2011, Wellpoint acquired CareMore Health Group, a senior health care delivery program that includes Medicare Advantage plans and certain clinics. In 2012, WellPoint acquired 1-800-CONTACTS, Inc, which sells contact lenses, eyeglasses and more. WellPoint also acquired Amerigroup Corporation, one of the country’s leading managed care companies which focuses on underserved populations.

In 2014, WellPoint changed its corporate name to Anthem, Inc. In 2015, Anthem Inc. acquired Simply Healthcare Holdings, Inc., a managed care program for recipients of Medicaid and Medicare in the state of Florida. In 2017, Anthem acquired Health Sun, a fast-growing integrated Medicare Advantage health plan and health care delivery network in Florida.
