Allied vs. American Family: What You Need to Know

Allied Mutual Automobile Association was formed by Harold Evans in 1929. After years of operating as a standalone brand, Allied Insurance became Nationwide in 1998. Policies, documents, bills and account statements for Allied customers are now featuring the Nationwide name and logo.

In 1927, Herman Wittwer launched Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1930, the company established National Mutual Casualty Company with a focus on non-farmers. In 1933, National Mutual and Farmer’s Mutual merged, entering into Minnesota. Farmers Mutual established the State Farm Mutual Insurance Company of Madison, Wisconsin. In 1948 State Farm Mutual of Madison is renamed Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Wisconsin. In 1957, Farmers Mutual introduced sickness and accident insurance, receiving 40 applications on day one. In 1958, the company began selling homeowners insurance and opened American Family Life Insurance Company, which expanded to 10 states in one year. In 1963, the name of the company was changed to American Family Mutual Insurance Company and in 1975 the company introduced Commercial Lines and became the fifth largest mutual auto insurer. By 1977, the company’s 50th year in business, American Family had 2.3 million policies and 2,360 agents. By 1981, the company’s assets surpassed $1 billion. In 1985, the company established American Family Brokerage, Inc for hard-to-place risks. In 1987 a CAT program is developed to help customers affected by storms and other wide-scale disasters. In 1994, American Family rolled out a catastrophe trailer. In 2005, American Family and the Green Bay Packers raised more than $1 million for breast cancer prevention, treatment and research. In 2007, American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin celebrated its grand opening. In 2011, the company challenged people to reflect on the most valuable thing they own--their dreams--in the “Dreams Protected” campaign. In 2012, American Family acquired the Permanent General Companies and other subsidiaries of the PGC Holdings Corp. In 2017, American Family aquired Wisconsin’s largest rooftop solar installation with almost 4,500 panels on the roof of the National Headquarters building in Madison.
