Allstate vs. Dairyland: What You Need to Know

Founded in 1931, Allstate is the nation’s largest publicly held personal lines insurer. It was founded by former Sears, Roebuck & Co President and Board Chairman, General Robert E. Wood, who initially sold policies through the mail, an innovative business move. The name Allstate was taken from a tire sold in the Sears catalog and the first sales location was in a Chicago Sears store. The first claim paid was to a man who showed up at the office holding a car door handle in his hand after an attempted car theft.

Dairyland Insurance Company began as a local insurer in Wisconsin over 60 years ago and grew to have a national presence. Today, the insurance company prides itself on maintaining its midwestern roots and what it calls “small-town values.” In 1916, The Hardware Dealers MutualFire Insurance Company of Wisconsin (known today as Sentry) began writing auto insurance policies. Professor Stuart Struck formed the Dairyland Mutual Insurance Company of Wisconsin in 1953 and in 1966 The Hardware Dealers Mutual Fire Insurance Company acquired Dairyland, which sold specialty insurance to drivers who couldn’t otherwise get standard coverage due to poor driving records, little driving experience or no prior insurance. In 1975 independent agents joined Dairyland and began selling motorcycle insurance. Two years later, they moved to a new headquarters in Steven Point, Wisconsin. Sentry, Dairyland’s parent company, celebrated 100 years of business in 2004. The following year, Sentry acquired Viking Insurance and doubled the size of Dairyland. Sentry has over $13 billion worth of assets and a policyholder surplus of $4.1 billion. In addition to motorcycle insurance, Dairyland is known for selling non-standard SR-22/SR22/SR 22 insurance and insurance for teen drivers at affordable rates.
