About Allstate

Founded in 1931, Allstate is the nation’s largest publicly held personal lines insurer. It was founded by former Sears, Roebuck & Co President and Board Chairman, General Robert E. Wood, who initially sold policies through the mail, an innovative business move. The name Allstate was taken from a tire sold in the Sears catalog and the first sales location was in a Chicago Sears store. The first claim paid was to a man who showed up at the office holding a car door handle in his hand after an attempted car theft.

In the 1950s, the company expanded to sell life, health and commercial insurance in addition to auto. The company also began teaching driver education to high school students and advertising on television. Perhaps the most famous commercials feature Dean Winters, the “Allstate Mayhem guy,” who appeared in the HBO prison drama Oz as well as television shows like “Rescue Me,” “30 Rock” and “Law & Order.” More recently, the company refreshed its tagline to appeal to millennials: “It’s good to be in good hands.” TV spots feature celebrities who appeal to millennials, including Tim Gunn, Adam DeVine and Leslie Jones.

Allstate became an advocate for making seat belt use mandatory in the 1960s and began selling commercial coverage in the late 1960s. In 1976, the company adopted the slogan “You’re in Good Hands with Allstate,” which is still used today. In 1983, Allstate introduced a new flexible type of life insurance policy with savings and investment options called Universal Life Insurance.

Allstate went public in 1993 after Sears sold 19.8% of the company, making its public offering the largest to date in the U.S. In 1995 Sears sold its remaining ownership, making Allstate a 100% publicly held corporation. Today, Allstate provides superior protection and retirement solutions to over 16 million households. Based in Northbrook, Illinois on a 122-acre tract, Allstate employs more than 70,000 insurance professionals across the country.

The company caters to the unique needs of a diverse clientele and has won awards for embracing diversity in the workplace and offering advancement opportunities to women in particular. In 2005, InformationWeek named Allstate as one of the top 50 innovative users of information technology. Fortune magazine ranked Allstate as the second most admired company in the Property and Casualty industry in 2005. Hispanic Business magazine ranked Allstate in the Top 50 Companies for Hispanics in 2005 and 2008. In 2009, Newsweek recognized Allstate as one of “100 Greenest Companies in America.”
