In 1869, MetLife began offering financial protection to working-class Americans, mostly Civil War sailors and soldiers. It was then called the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and soon shifted to a focus on life insurance. By 1909, MetLife was the nation’s largest life insurer. From1907 to 2005, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower was the company’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan. It was the world’s tallest building until 1913. In the 1990s the company acquired Unitrin Insurance and founded Kemper Corporation. In the early 2000s, Kemper Insurance Companies laid off thousands of employees in Chicago and across the country.
